Starting off this second week of ebay paintings with some salad dressing. We just got these two bottles for dispensing our olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. This is number four of this weeks ebay listings. It seems to be a week of single objects. I've got a few compositions involving ice in the works, so this is a study, of sorts, of ice. Glass Sphere No.3

I'm back to the little glass sphere. I never seem to tire of painting this subject. It was lit from above in this composition. I wanted to see, with more direct lighting, if I could draw out the depth of the object. Portray a sense of the "glass". I've just begun a search for an actual crystal ball. One with less impurites, and more refractive capabilities than these particular glass spheres. Utilize it in a manner similar to, but not a direct "rip-off" of, artist Steve Mills. I found four of these small goblets at one of our local antique shops. They had a really great shape, and three of the four shined up nicely. They've rekindled my enthusiasm for painting reflective objects, and will probably be seen frequently on this site for a while. I'd like to thank everybody who took the time to "comment" on the painting in the previous post. I received a lot of good advice and positive feedback about the Chevy. I appreciate it. I'm not sure what I'll do with the painting. To tell you the truth, for the moment, I'm really pretty happy just having it hang in my office.
Above is the first post of five new paintings I have earmarked for Twinhouse. A small, really perfect tomato I picked up at the Kroger. This hasn't been delivered to the gallery as yet. 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air

This is not a recently produced painting, but it is one of my favorites. I did it a couple of years ago for a show at Twinhouse gallery. It wasn't particularly well received, and has since been "dissed" by all of my galleries. None will show it. "Can't sell it", is the universal reply. This was the same response my second auto painting, "Chevrolet" received. At first I believed this subject could be a major direction for my work. This obviously turned out not to be the case. I'm sure the gallery directors, and owners, know their clientele, but it remains a source of disappointment for me. I believe these two paintings represent some of my best work to date. Anyway, while I'm working on a new group of still life paintings, I thought I'd bring some attention back to this piece, of which I'm very proud. In a day or two, I'll begin to post the five new paintings I'm currently working on.

Pear on the Edge

I would like to say to all of you who have taken the time to leave "comments" on this blog, thank you. I read them all, derive a great deal of pleasure from the kind words, and take them very seriously. Each painting is a struggle for me, and it's very reassuring to read that my intent with each piece, at least with some, has been achieved. Many comments have brought to my attention aspects of the painting that I hadn't been aware of. So again, thanks. They are very much appreciated.

This piece is currently at Wynne/Falconer. I hadn't done a pear in a while, and it's one of my favorite fruits to paint. This pear sets on the ledge of the wainscotting in the home of my gallery owner here in Atlanta. If you'd like purchase information for this painting, click here.

Pool Balls

Here's the second of the four new ebay paintings. Once again - Pool Balls. I've been toying with the idea of doing this subject really large. One of my favorite realists artists, Pedros Campos, creates these beautiful paintings of fruit in cellophane bags, and they are very large. Forty eight inches square. I thought it would be challenging to try something like that myself. Really get into the meat of the subject, and deal with all of the subtleties of value, and reflection. I wouldn't attempt a format quite that large, but possilby 30 x 30. This piece is a six by six, but the composition has been cropped, so that the subject is slightly overscale. Sort of a tentative first step in this project. At this point it's still just an idea, but it's something I've thought about for quite a while. Here's more of what I've been working on for the galleries. Peanut butter and jelly. There seems to be a bread theme developing here. I think I'll be exploring this subject for a little while. It's been fun trying to add a bit of texture into my paintings. This piece was just shipped off to New York along with the Pool Balls, and Sliced Bread to Stricoff Fine Art. Percolator on Linen

Here's the fourth of the eight finished paintings. I'm back to my favorite Percolator. This will also be one of my entries representing Twinhouse at this years ArtHouse. I wanted to work on a table cloth that was flatter, and not so bunched up, like I usually do. My goal was to show more subtle creases, and latent folds. Nautilus

Here's the third of the eight finished paintings. I love this Nautilus shell. I've painted it twice before, but couldn't resist doing it again. This will be one of my entries representing Twinhouse at this years ArtHouse. Once a year the Atlanta Gallery Association leases a newly built mansion for a month, and fills each room with artwork from the member galleries. Here's another of the eight finished paintings I've been working on these last couple of weeks. I wanted to try my hand at plastic bags. I had done a cherry painting, with the fruit in a cellophane bag for my last show at Twinhouse, and wanted to go there again. I've been neglecting my blog lately. My focus has been on completing a number of new paintings to be offered to my galleries. Beach Lamp

I thought I'd use my blog to bring attention to work on display at my galleries. Present work that I've just completed, and others painted in the recent past. I also wanted to illustrate, with this piece, that all of my paintings are not done in a square format. This image came from a home in Seaside Florida. I was struck by the geometry of the lamp, and its shadow cast across the blank stucco wall. There's a lot of negative space, but I felt it was an integral part of the composition. In Progress

I don't usually post images of my work until I'm finished. Many times paintings don't meet my expectations, and they get gessoed over then replaced with another painting. Karen has let me have it a number of times when I've destroyed a piece that she loved, but I couldn't live with. So, my works in progress can have a very short life. But Lisa Gloria very politely asked me to show some works "in progress", and I couldn't say no. These images are at the first pass stage. A second, and occasionally a third pass is necessary to finish the painting. They are 6 x 6 inch squares painted on hardboard panels. If they survive I'll post the completed versions next week when I plan to list another five on ebay.

the Daily Painters Guild

Some months back a number of artist/bloggers began to connect with each other via links to their blogs. Fifteen artists who paint daily decided to create a single site where their work could be shown together. After a few months of discussion and planning the Daily Painters Guild was formed. I feel very privileged to be a member of this group. I have, without exception, the greatest admiration, and respect for all the painters involved.

I will also be posting some new pieces next week. I've been busy with some commissioned paintings, which I usually don't list on this site.

I've been working on some new pool ball compositions. It's just so fun to use bright colors for a change. I've got a few in the clear glass mixing bowl, and have some in ceramic dishes. I like the look of the vividly colored balls in the simple white plates and bowls. Hopefully, a few of these will become larger pieces for the galleries. Karen and I have been approached by a gallery on Cape Cod to offer our work there. The gallery is in Chatham MA, and is called Wynne/Falconer. The gallery has been there for nearly 50 years, and principals Kenny and Allison Wynne are excited to have us included in their roster of artists. They followed the progress of our show here in Atlanta through this blog, and were very happy with our success. I believe that we will be a good match.

Having spent the last couple of months preparing for our show at Twinhouse, it will be fun working up some ideas for paintings to send up to the cape. I have one painting there now. It's another view of Isabelle's. A restaurant in a victorian home located near the foot of the Appalachian mountains in north Georgia.

HollingsworthSquared - the Reception

Well . . . it was a great night! Despite the rather dreary weather, and with no photographic evidence to prove it - the upcoming pix were taken after the gallery closed - the house was packed. Karen and I were stunned at the turnout.



There were the loyal, and true friends that attend all of our openings. Enthusiastic relatives happy to be there to lend their support to their; son, daughter, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece or cousin. And, an appreciative audience of generous guests. Some who came to look, and voice their, very complimentary views, and others that came to purchase.



Sales for the night were impressive. Of the twenty paintings I presented, sixteen sold, one is on hold - needed permission from their accountant to buy, and three remained unsold. Suprisingly, they were some of my favorites: the "Scissors", the small dead bird, "Fallen", and the "Eggs & Fork". I think the little bird just made people too sad.



Karen's sales were even more impressive when you consider that the sizes of her paintings were considerably larger than mine. Ranging from 24 x 36 / 36 x 36 / 48 x 48. Of the fourteen paintings she presented, eight have sold, with one on hold.



It was a wonderful night. All of the visitors that spoke with us were very positive about our work, and happy to see so many red dots. Karen and I drove home drunk on the enthusiastic response we had received from so many guests over the course of the night.

This morning we walked into our studio, scanned the empty walls, and sobered up to the realization that our "fifteen minutes" was over, and it was time to get back to work.

I'd like to say once again, how appreciative I was of the comments you all left on this blog regarding the paintings I was working on for this show. Thank you.

Well the time has almost come. About 24 hours from now we'll start getting ready to leave. We had a wintery mix of rain and ice this morning, but the weather looks like it will be pretty nice tomorrow evening. Hopefully people will feel inclined to head into town on a winters night. Fortunately I was able to complete all twenty paintings for the show. Fingers crossed, Karen and I will see some red dots before the evening ends. I'd like to say that I am very appreciative of all the comments you've written concerning each piece. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to put up some, or possibly all, of the paintings I was planning to present for my January show at the Twinhouse Gallery. This way I could show the relationship between some of the "studies", and the completed paintings, in a single venue. My goal is to have approximately 20 of these 10 x 10 paintings for the show.
