Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty | 18 x 18 | oil on panel

I went with my gut, and decided to go ahead, and paint the big drill. It may turn out to be a flop, but I had a blast working on it. Most fun I've had on a painting in while. Big knobbly, heavy duty, mechanically, steel tools are just so cool. I need to keep my eye out for more like this. Now on to what ever comes next. I think, maybe it's time for a percolator.

Very cool. I can feel the weight of it. :)

I think the popularity on this one will be split down gender lines. It reminds me of an artist from the 60s that I discovered in art school named Walter Tandy Murch. He would paint carburetors, air filters and various mechanical items in a dramatic way somewhat like yours. I like the ambiguity of drill/50s toy spaceship or something. Love that reflected blue light on the metal. Sucker looks indestructible! -Steve

Wow! James, it's anything but a flop! This thing looks SOLID - both the subject and the painting!

You are one of my favorite realist painters and this is one of my favorite paintings! Your work is more than just "copying what you see". Fantastic. Really enjoy your paintings:-)

Remember Tim the Toolman from the Home Improvement tv show? He would absolutely have to have this one!!

Extremely well done, James!

So cool. It does not matter that you have painted a drill per se. Due to your perfect presentation, it has meaning far beyond its just being a drill.

C'mon, you can paint anything! And you give each object even more character and personality than they deserve.

If you see it on the picture, it seems to be very easy. But this type of modern art is very difficult to make. On the following webpage I found more modern art which is really fascinating!

Very realistic image! I think this kind of subject matter looks edgy as well!

My painting studio space is shared with a very well-equipped workshop...this old drill is a perfect iconic symbol for those great oil-soaked arenas. Great idea!
