Glass Sphere

oil on hardboard panel
6'' x 6"

sold

I've been working on a few new ebay pieces this week. Here's the first of (hopefully) four six by sixers. The mood struck me this week to do something transparent, so I got out one of my small glass spheres, and placed it on the window sill in the sun. If you'd like to bid on this painting, you can do so by clicking here.

This is so incredibly beautiful that it's spooky. Brushes are a magician's wand in your hand, my friend. Bravo.

I have come back to this work again and again, never tiring out of the fascinating visual experience and a strange sense of caution that I might not topple the sphere off the ledge!

Neil, I have often thought about the HB panel that you use. Do you fuss over tempered/non-tempered? Mostly, I see 1/4 inch thickness. Is this MDF? It would be mighty nice of you write a few lines on this subject. Thanks.

Thanks all. SH - I use masonite and MDF, both of which I get from my local "home" supply store. I buy them in 24 x 48 sheets, and cut them down to individual 6 x 6 panels. In the beginning I would gesso the boards with a brush, and then sand them glass smooth. This proved to be a difficult surface, so I began to apply the gesso with a small foam roller, and eliminated the sanding step. This provided a much needed "tooth", that my previous panels lacked. I like this surface much better. Neil.

Thanks for writing this. The roller tip is great. Main reason for my not using the panels is not being able to get the tooth that canvas has to offer. Will try this too.
