Pool Platter

oil on hardboard panel
6'' x 6"
sold

I've been working on some new pool ball compositions. It's just so fun to use bright colors for a change. I've got a few in the clear glass mixing bowl, and have some in ceramic dishes. I like the look of the vividly colored balls in the simple white plates and bowls. Hopefully, a few of these will become larger pieces for the galleries. The colors really pop out in the monochromatic setting.

Neil, I really enjoy your paintings. Your daily paintings truly do get my day off to the right start!

I really enjoy the pool ball paintings. You mentioned in your comments that you enjoy using the bright colors. This reminded me of the tree ornament displays I've seen around Christmas.

They are usually large bowls and tall vases (typically clear) filled with festive Christmas tree ornaments. Sometimes the ornaments are all one color, sometimes many colors, sometimes there's a theme (e.g., all fruit ornaments or soldiers).

Perhaps these would work as another subject matter that would capitalize upon your ability to capture dazzling objects in a container AND use bright colors.

Thrilled to see you offering work for auction! Will be watching faithfully! Hope to see some of Karen's work for auction too!

Thanks all. Hey gts, I was watching all of the daily paintings of christmas ornaments and wanted to join in. I just couldn't muster up the energy to dig out my old ornaments. I will definitely explore that theme in 2007.

Your work is just a feast for the eyes! I use to write to Karen some years ago and I suspect she would not even remember me. I just had to comment on those wonderful pool balls. My husband has a pool table and has played since he was 5 so we have some antique sets of balls here and I have been photgraphing them for a possible painting,,,and then to see someone has already done it! HA! I will have to be very careful that they do not look similar. Your work is very inspiring!

Congratulations on your show! That's great news. One of the things that strikes me with this one is that you do a great job with the numbers. They usually jump out shouting in paintings but yours are subdued and nicely integrated. Do you have a strategy you'd be willing to share?

Also that milky translucency you get on the whites is great!

Wow I LOVE your work. You should sell them as prints, more people should enjoy them!

Hey Jane of course we remember you, and I can't wait to see your take on the pool ball thing. Thanks Lisa for your comment on the "milky transluscency". I've been really trying to achieve just that. I haven't gotten there yet, but still working on it. And thanks again to all who have left comments, it fuels me. I'll have some new postings next week. Been working on gallery and commission stuff lately. Till then...
